Bacchanal: A riotous or drunken festivity. Synonyms: misbehavior, disobedience, indiscretion, contravention.

One of Shakespeare’s best-known and most oft-performed antic comedies, Midsummer in this production receives a high-concept take, being set at the Bacchanalian celebrations of Carnival in the Caribbean, at the height of communal transgression. This production focuses on the uncovering of the visceral self at its deepest and most immediate, through music, magic, and madness. The frantic pursuit of passion in its myriad forms—young, mature, constant, fickle, and instantaneous—is set against a sensuous background of Soca music, sequins and sweat, and velvet night to bring us face to face with our deepest unspoken cravings, making us fraught with anticipation. How does the transformative nature of desire fuel our actions? How do we really pursue love? And can we sing, dance, and frolic along the way?
