Studio Theatre

In recognition of the 100th birthday of Tennessee Williams, the Department of Theatre presents the fifth in a series of the early plays by America's dramatic poet. Battle of Angels is the story of the enigmatic drifter Valentine Xavier, who is hired to help in the dry goods store run by Myra Torrance. The two misfits fight for their lives with the small-minded residents of a southern town in the late 1930s. Both mystic and expressionistic, Battle of Angels is the rough and raw version of the play that was refined into Orpheus Descending and then evolved into the film Fugitive Kind with Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani. Before The Glass Menagerie, Battle of Angels introduced American audiences to the distinctive southern voice of Tennessee Williams.
