In this brutal look at love in 1930s Tennessee, Toulou dreams of becoming a blues singer and leans on the understanding of Candylady, the Hoodoo Madame of Beale Street, after being loved and abused by the men in her life. Playwright Katori Hall received a University of Illinois Kate Neal Kinley Fellowship in 2008-09 in support of her burgeoning career. Since that time, she has vaulted to the heights of the professional scene, winning London’s Olivier Award for The Mountaintop, her 2010 work focused on Martin Luther King Jr. Hoodoo Love, one of Hall’s first plays, will introduce this gifted young writer to Central Illinois audiences and is presented as part of the National Theatre Conference’s Initiative to Celebrate American Women Playwrights.
